it's late, so a blind guess seems appropriate:
'operator' doesn't have adequate permissions on /dev/lp0.
by default (on my rh 5 system), permissions are:
> crw-r----- 1 root daemon 6, 0 Dec 31 1979 lp0
and 'operator' isn't in the 'daemon' group.
