Subject: [*] Dominoes 1.0

You remember how much you loved Dominoes as a child. Now is your chance to
relive those exciting moments in your quiet moments while avoiding work. Enjoy
the frustration of the computer as it has to draw a dozen tiles before it can
play, experience the thrill of playing your last tile and scoring with it at the
same time.

This is a version of "Domino Muggins", implementing a scoring system of
multiples
of 5. Easy to learn, tough to put down. Fun for the whole family, etc...

Requires a mac running at least System 7 (is System 8 compatible), on at least a
68020. Uses colour, but should run fine on those one or two black and white
machines out there.

Subject: [*] InformINIT 8.1

This announcement is from:
Dan Frakes <frakes@kagi.com>

InformINIT:
MacUser Shareware of the Year Award, 5-Mice Award, MacWorld Online Pick.
InformINIT's web site is a MacWorld Best Mac Web Site.

If you've ever wondered what all of those control panels, extensions, and
other System-related files in your System Folder are for, InformINIT is
for you!

InformINIT is an application which provides information on a
mind-boggling number of System Folder files: control panels, extensions,
system folder contents, and more -- from both Apple and third-party
developers. Information includes file descriptions, who needs what,
version numbers, RAM consumption, and helpful tips (even a few
"secrets"). Where appropriate, files are organized into "groups" that are
mainly used together. Live URLs to information sources on the Web are
provided for files that require extensive discussion.

But InformINIT is not just "INITs" -- it contains sections on installing
the latest system software, files which don't take up system RAM, items
found loose in the System Folder, startup file management utilities,
PRAM, and the Modern Memory Manager. It also contains a primer on System
software for beginners, and a thorough discussion of the new HFS Plus
file format by Eric Belsley of the Mac Resource Page. It also provides
links to some of the best Mac info sites on the Web.There have been many
imitations of, and efforts similar to, InformINIT, but it remains THE
reference for System Folder information. Even Apple's own technical
support staff uses it and recommends it to customers!

InformINIT 8.1 is current through Mac OS 8.1.

System requirements: InformINIT will run on all Mac OS computers except
for those with 68000 processors. It requires 1.5 MB of free RAM, and less
than 1MB of hard drive space.

For more information, please visit the InformINIT web page:

Karlheinz Essl

LEXIKON-SONATE (1992-98)
interactive realtime composition for computer-controlled piano

http://www.essl.at/works/Lexikon-Sonate.html

About...
========

LEXIKON-SONATE is a work-in-progress which was started in 1992. Instead of
being a composition in which the structure is fixed by notation, it
manifests itself as a computer program that composes an excerpt of a
virtually endless piano piece in real time. LEXIKON-SONATE lacks two
characteristics of a traditional piano piece: there is no pre-composed text
to be interpreted, and there is no need for a pianist. Instead, the
instructions for playing the piano are directly generated by a computer
program and transmitted immediately to a player piano, a MIDI synthesizer
or the sound card of the computer itself which executes them.
LEXIKON-SONATE can be perceived rather as a meta-composition which enables
the unfolding of piano music than a fixed work.

LEXIKON-SONATE allows various ways of performing and interaction: in
"automatic mode" it would play endlessly without any user intervention. You
can also perform the piece directly on the computer which turns into a
musical instrument controlled by key strokes on the computer keyboard.

System requirements
===================

* Apple Macintosh Computer (68040 or PowerPC) with at least 16 MB of RAM,
System 7.5 or higher

* Quicktime 2.5 or higher installed (or a standard MIDI-interface attached
to the serial port of your Macintosh). Due to the much better sound
quality, the use of Quicktime 3.0 is highly recommended.

Legal Stuff
===========

This program is freeware but not public domain. The whole package may be
distributed freely as long as the content of the distribution folder is not
modified. It is not allowed to sell the program. LEXIKON-SONATE can be
included in CD-ROM's if you notify the author before.

Subject: [*] McPoet 4.4

McPoet is a set of tools for text generation and text morphing: that is,
tools for writing computer-generated and computer-assisted poetry. It
uses its own simple language to allow the text-generation rules to be
completely user-configurable. It is easy to write your own rules for
McPoet even if you know nothing about programming your Mac. You can also
use the large set of built-in rules, or the (now much-improved)
automatic rule-generating function which can turn ordinary text into an
executable rule. The text morphing features include an automatic version
of Tristan Tzara's original Dadaist formula for creating poetry from
text, an eecummingsfication feature for imitating the style of the great
poet ee cummings, multiple forms of Markov chaining (with several
built-in probability tables) and much more. Rule files and the word-type
files that they reference are stored externally, on disk. As a result,
there are no strong constraints on the number of word types or rules you
can use- McPoet can be massively expanded by the end-user.
Versions 4.x are much improved over version 3.x. Version 4.4
fixes a few bugs and adds a new 'performance reading' mode.
In tribute to its Dadaist roots, McPoet is uncopyrighted and
free. It may be freely redistributed. It requires at least 4.5 megabytes
of free disk space, at least 3 megabytes of available RAM, and a fast
processor (or great patience!). Though a PowerPC is highly recommended,
it is compatible with all Macs.

All existing freeware/shareware defraggers destroy your hard drive. STAY
AWAY from them.

DiskExpress is an excellent defragger; it is around $30-$40.

Or you could just back up your hard drive to floppies and then restore it.

Subject: Question: Problem with Deltagraph 4.0.4

This is a request for help with a problem I'm facing with Deltagraph 4.0.4.

I have installed it on a PowerMac 7500/100 with 24 MB RAM and running OS
8.0. I installed with extensions off. On restarting with extensions
Deltagraph wouldn't start up and gave a Type 3 error. It worked fine
without extensions. After trial and error I discovered that the problem
extension
was QuickTime V2.50. This is now causing a problem for me as I need
QuickTime for
other applications.

The Deltagraph support people say that they know about this problem and
that I could try to upgrade to Quicktime 3.0 which MAY solve the problem.
However, before downloading that 7 or 8 MB file I thought I would check
with the people subscribed to Info-Mac if anyone has faced this problem and
whether upgrading to Quicktime 3.0 will solve it.

Can you please e-mail me a copy of your replies also, since sometimes
Info-Mac doesn't get through to me if the file size is > 60K.

Thanks for your time,

-Sameer Joshi
