Instead of being a composition in which the structure is fixed by notation, it manifests itself as a computer program that composes an excerpt of a virtually endless piano piece in real time. LEXIKON-SONATE lacks two characteristics of a traditional piano piece: there is no pre-composed text to be interpreted, and there is no need for a pianist. Instead, the instructions for playing the piano are directly generated by a computer program and transmitted immediately to a player piano, a MIDI synthesizer or the sound card of the computer itself which executes them. LEXIKON-SONATE can be perceived rather as a meta-composition which enables the unfolding of piano music than a fixed work. LEXIKON-SONATE allows various ways of performing and interaction: in "automatic mode" it would play endlessly without any user intervention. You can also perform the piece directly on the computer which turns into a musical instrument controlled by key strokes on the computer keyboard. System requirements =================== * Apple Macintosh Computer (68040 or PowerPC) with at least 16 MB of RAM, System 7.5 or higher * Quicktime 2.5 or higher installed (or a standard MIDI-interface attached to the serial port of your Macintosh). Due to the much better sound quality, the use of Quicktime 3.0 is highly recommended. Legal Stuff =========== This program is freeware but not public domain. The whole package may be distributed freely as long as the content of the distribution folder is not modified. It is not allowed to sell the program. LEXIKON-SONATE can be included in CD-ROM's if you notify the author before. It uses its own simple language to allow the text-generation rules to be completely user-configurable. It is easy to write your own rules for McPoet even if you know nothing about programming your Mac. You can also use the large set of built-in rules, or the (now much-improved) automatic rule-generating function which can turn ordinary text into an executable rule. The text morphing features include an automatic version of Tristan Tzara's original Dadaist formula for creating poetry from text, an eecummingsfication feature for imitating the style of the great poet ee cummings, multiple forms of Markov chaining (with several built-in probability tables) and much more. Rule files and the word-type files that they reference are stored externally, on disk. As a result, there are no strong constraints on the number of word types or rules you can use- McPoet can be massively expanded by the end-user. Versions 4.x are much improved over version 3.x. Version 4.4 fixes a few bugs and adds a new 'performance reading' mode. In tribute to its Dadaist roots, McPoet is uncopyrighted and free. It may be freely redistributed. It requires at least 4.5 megabytes of free disk space, at least 3 megabytes of available RAM, and a fast processor (or great patience!). Though a PowerPC is highly recommended, it is compatible with all Macs.
