MH & nmh: Email for Users & Programmers

The book MH & xmh: Email for Users & Programmers, ISBN 1-56592-093-7, written by Jerry Peek, was published by and is copyright © 1991, 1992, 1995 by O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. In June, 1996, ORA made the book freely available under the terms of the GNU General Public License; please read the information about copying and distribution.

This is the fourth updated online edition. It originally came from the book's third print edition. The title is "MH & nmh" instead of "MH & xmh." But the book still covers MH, xmh, exmh and mh-e -- as well as the new version of MH called nmh.

The most up-to-date copy of this book is at http://www.ics.uci.edu/~mh/book/. If you'll use the book often, check the list of servers... maybe bookmark a second server in case one's down.

I update the online Web version as often as I can -- including minor problems that readers spot. Here's what's new: updates and new features. And some other notes:

This book covers MH, nmh, and several interfaces to them. The Road Map is a good place to start. If you're using frames, you've got an index search box and a listing of the main table of contents. Non-frames users: if your server or system is set up to do it, you can search the index (NOTE: it's an unusual egrep search; here are tips) or see the complete table of contents. The book has five main sections:

Overall information for users of MH, nmh, and all their interfaces. For example, this introduces those packages and has an overview of MIME.
MH starts with basic MH and nmh usage, then covers customization. (Here are links to MH info helpful for users of xmh and exmh. Sorry, no mh-e links yet.)
xmh is a way to use MH from the X Window System.
mh-e runs from the GNU Emacs editor.
exmh, written with Tcl/Tk, works under the X Window System.
